Question 1

Can I use this to store passwords?

Accepted Answer

No. SHA-256 is designed to be fast, which is exactly what makes brute forcing easy. Passwords need deliberately slow algorithms such as bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2.

Question 2

Is MD5 still usable?

Accepted Answer

Not for security — collisions have been producible for years. It's only meaningful for non-security purposes such as catching accidental corruption.
